Biomedical magnetic resonance is a multidisciplinary field which encompasses a broad spectrum of medical, biological, chemical, physical, computer, and mathematical sciences. Consequently, the ability to fully utilize this methodology for solving basic and clinical biomedical problems has often been stymied by researchers’ lack of knowledge or expertise in one or more key areas.
Therefore, in addition to facilitating communication between the basic and clinical scientific realms (through driving biomedical, collaborative and service projects), the Research Resource has focused, since its inception almost 26 years ago, on training as a key component of its research mission. This training service not only entails educating future scientists on the fundamentals of magnetic resonance and optical imaging theory and application, but also functions as a means for both new and established researchers to learn about new developments in the field and to hone their skills for applications within their own research programs.
Investigators may be trained on an individual basis by Resource staff or through group mechanisms such as seminars, courses, and workshops. The Resource facility houses over forty desks in a wall-less, cubicle-free environment which promotes open communication and discussion among the Principal Investigator, predoctoral and postdoctoral fellows, and visiting and senior researchers. In fact, many former students continue to maintain a presence within the facility in order to have access to facility resources or to establish collaborations with newly arrived researchers and students.
Students, postdoctoral fellows, clinical fellows, residents, investigators with driving biomedical projects and collaborative and service projects come from a variety of backgrounds, including medicine, bioengineering, biophysics, chemistry, physics, engineering, and mathematics.
